Introduction to
Drama Therapy

The course aims to equip participants with a foundation for the use of the arts in health, specifically in drama therapy. Participants are invited to integrate learning into their own lives, so that it influences their practice.  This course is structured with readings from research and treatment in drama therapy and related fields, lectures, and embodied activities to support and facilitate reflection and integration.

Program Objectives

 
  • To learn the most prominent concepts, processes, theories and practices in the field of drama therapy and its application in different contexts 

  • To be aware of ethical considerations in drama therapy practice

  • To engage in experiential processes to understand and evaluate the key aspects of drama therapy practice.

  • To analyze primary sources, current literature, and original research in drama therapy


At the end of the course, you can expect to:

 
  • Equip yourself with more tools in engaging in your inner work in order to establish a foundation of the use of a drama-focused approach

  • Develop a sensitivity toward an ethical and responsible use of a drama-focused approach 

  • Be empowered toward personal and social transformation through a drama-focused, process-oriented approach 

  • Discover the impact of a drama-focused approach in the process of working with individuals and groups in specific contexts

  • Have a culturally relevant foundation for a drama-focused approach grounded in Filipino lifeways as enriched by Filipino indigenous practices, thereby being an effective intervention in helping bridge the mental health gap in the Philippine context 

  • Apply skills within their own practices through a practical toolkit for integrating drama in a responsible and ethical manner

Course Instructor

Monica Lopez Gamboa, MA is a Creative Arts Therapist at Montefiore Medical Center within the Adult Inpatient Psychiatry Department. She graduated from the Drama Therapy program at NYU, was the former research assistant of the Theatre and Health Lab and coordinator for the World Alliance of Drama Therapy. She works with various populations including underserved Filipino children and adolescents in urban poor communities. Her current work includes developing protocols centered on Filipino psychology, the Philippine diaspora, archetypal astrology, self-care and social justice.
